Love speaks, and we take the words to heart

At this lovely time of year, I’m sighing and smiling over the many ways film characters bare their hearts for the ones they love. “When Love speaks, the voice of all the gods / Makes heaven drowsy with the harmony,” Shakespeare wrote. Not all of them are as eloquent as he, but even the silent declarations of love are earnest and true.

I rounded up 14 of my favorite onscreen declarations of love here for Word & Film today, from “Casablanca” through “The Princess Bride,” through “WALL-E” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” May they inspire your own love story.
