Sheriff Walt Longmire favors a Ford Bronco on duty instead of a horse, but the cable series bearing his name has such a strong Western presence that he’d seem equally at home solving crime from a saddle. Passionate fans of the Wyoming-set drama whooped with anticipation online after Netflix this month ordered ten new episodes of “Longmire,” which A&E canceled after three seasons, in spite of drawing nearly six million viewers.
Based on the book series by author Craig Johnson, “Longmire” follows the old-fashioned, laconic sheriff (Robert Taylor) through weekly investigations in the Cowboy State plus the overarching mystery behind the killing of his beloved wife. (Her ashes often rested by his side in a wooden box normally reserved for tea.) Assisting him are deputies Victoria “Vic” Moretti (Katee Sackhoff), Branch Connally (Bailey Chase), and The Ferg (Adam Bartley), plus longtime friend Henry Standing Bear (Lou Diamond Phillips) and an occasional spirit guide. Henry’s friendship and mediation prove valuable when Longmire’s leads wind into the nearby Cheyenne Indian reservation.
The third season ended in August with a gunshot-based cliffhanger. Naturally, we’re thrilled we’ll learn who survived the tense confrontation between Branch and his father (Gerald McRaney), as well as more revelations into Mrs. Longmire’s death.
